The flame is pointed in the direction of the welding but slightly downward, so as to preheat the edges of the joint. The major difficulty with the forehand welding method is encountered when welding thicker metals. In order to obtain adequate penetration and proper fusion of the groove surfaces, as well as to permit the movements of the tip and rod, a wide V-groove (90◦ included angle) must be created at the joint. This results in a large puddle that can prove difficult to control, particularly in the overhead position.

These color distinctions are for safety reasons. For example, using an oxygen hose to carry acetylene could cause a serious accident. No hose should be used for any purpose other than its initial use. A further safety precaution is the design of the threading on the hose connections. The fuel gas hoses have left-hand threaded connections (and a groove around the outside), whereas the oxygen hoses are fitted with right-hand thread connections and swivel nuts at both ends. NOTE Always use the shortest possible hose length between the cylinders and the torch.

Use a tip with a small opening for welding thin sheet metal. NOTE It is very important to use the correct tip size for the proper working pressure. If too small a tip is employed, the heat will not be sufficient to fuse the metal to the proper depth. When the tip is too large, the heat is too great and can burn holes in the metal. 2. Oxyacetylene Welding 33 1. Select the correct tip size for the welding job. The size of the welding tip depends on many factors, including the thickness of the metal, the welding position, and the type of metal being welded.
