Chapter five addresses the climate of engineering departments, defined as student perceptions of “what it is like” to be in the department with respect to practices, policies, procedures, routines, and rewards. Quantitative survey data suggest there are three aspects of department climate that are predictive of a student’s intent to leave an engineering program: institutional support, personal agency and peer support, and perception of fit.

Students’ narratives of their classroom experiences, professors’ instructional approaches, including both student and faculty survey responses, are integrated with data from class observations, faculty interviews, and surveys in chapter six. How students experience classroom instruction is the issue analyzed here in addition to unraveling the multiple reasons students chose engineering. g. g. community college, high school courses).
