Each day, headlines warn that child bottles are leaching risky chemical substances, nonstick pans are inflicting infertility, and plastic bins are making us fats. What if eco-friendly chemistry may switch all that? What if instead of toxics, our economic climate ran on innocuous, environmentally-friendly materials?

Elizabeth Grossman, an acclaimed journalist who introduced nationwide awareness to the contaminants hidden in pcs and different excessive tech electronics, now tackles the dangers of standard patron items. She exhibits that for the sake of comfort, potency, and momentary defense, we now have created artificial chemical substances that essentially switch, at a molecular point, the best way bodies paintings. the implications diversity from diabetes to melanoma, reproductive and neurological disorders.

but it’s difficult to visualize lifestyles with no the creature comforts present fabrics provide—and Grossman argues we don't have to. a systematic revolution is introducing items which are “benign through design,” constructing production strategies that ponder health and wellbeing affects at each degree, and is growing new compounds that mimic instead of disrupt ordinary structures. via interviews with best researchers, Grossman offers us a primary examine this radical transformation.

eco-friendly chemistry is simply getting underway, however it bargains wish that we will be able to certainly create items that gain well-being, the surroundings, and industry.

The recipients of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award alone have eliminated enough hazardous substances to fill a train eight miles long,” says Anastas. These conversations with Anastas and others helped give Warner’s career its present direction. “I had a great relationship with Polaroid,” recalls Warner. “But after my son died, I left because I wanted to create the world’s first green chemistry PhD program”—which he did, at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell in 2002. Although green chemistry ideas have been out in the world as articulated by Warner, Anastas, and their colleagues for some years now, they have made few substantial inroads in standard academic science curricula in the United States.

Meanwhile, European legislation restricting certain synthetic chemicals with known adverse health impacts has prompted numerous manufacturers to redesign or reformulate products ranging from nail polish to IV tubes to computers. Given the history of these chemical products, rules that protect proprietary information (the secret formulas for these substances), and absence of independent third-party oversight, how are we to be assured of any new material’s safety, now, ten, or twenty or more years from now?

The chemical emissions prompting the climatic changes we’re now seeing have largely the same petrochemical origins as the synthetic chemicals altering essential cellular behavior in plants and animals, including humans, worldwide. The materials prompting global warming and all of its climate-disrupting impacts are thus, in effect, the backstory to that of these problematic mobile chemical contaminants that are interfering with the cellular and genetic processes vital to health. We are in this fix largely because, over the course of the past century, worldwide we became a petrochemical society.
