The last thing we want to see is our bright-saturated blue skies shifting to purple after a conversion. This was a common problem. Even with good gamut mapping, we can’t overcome the limitations of the output devices. Saturated colors often will become less saturated. Nevertheless, we certainly do want options in how the mapping is done. S i d e b a r Source and Destination: ICC profiles have a very important role. We use ICC profiles so we can take one set of existing numbers in a certain color space and create a new set of numbers in a new color space optimized for some other device.

The saturation rendering intent was at one time recommended for solid graphics like logos or pie charts (sometimes referred to as business graphics) and the gamut mapping is weighted to produce the most vivid saturated colors (hence the name). For this reason, using this intent on images can produce less than desirable results. However, depending on the profile and how it was built, the saturation intent might be fine for some images so don’t dismiss it outright. In most cases, this intent really is going to be best used for files that don’t contain images and for use on business graphics and similar types of imagery.

This process examines the new media and accounts for differences found, then adjusts the printer by calibrating it back to a factory default calibration. Once an ICC profile is produced that describes this factory default behavior, any time new media is loaded and a calibration procedure is conducted, that profile remains valid and useful. Calibration and profiling work hand in hand. Devices that can’t be calibrated and have inconsistent behaviors are poor candidates for any kind of color management and should be avoided like the plague.
