Religion demands too much of a man's time, attention, energies, and decisions to make Page 7 it possible for him to devote himself to art as much as a man ought. The reverse is true as well. A life dedicated to art allows an insufficient place for religion, if religion is to be taken with the seriousness it deserves.

Finally, we have (f) religion as ceremonial, religion qualified by art, and (g) religious art, art religiously qualified. I will concentrate on the last of these, but some attention must be paid to the others.
