Martha “Calamity Jane” Cannary took-on the Wild West in both fact and in fiction. She tested the traditional expectations of 19th century women and became famous for her expert shooting and hard drinking. Cannary was born in Mercer County, Missouri, about 1856, and died near Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1903. She was buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery with her friend and co-performer Wild Bill Hickok, who was killed in 1876.
