The spruce is recognized by its sharp, single needles. All other single-needle Pinaceae are soft, not sharp. Spruce still dominates the coldest and largest forest on the continent, the boreal. Also common in the northern hardwoods zone, spruce try more than any other evergreen to keep their feet wet, and they often manage by living within damp forest seeps or swamps. With a low, full sweeping skirt of branches and a very thin, flaky bark, spruce are not well adapted to survive fire. Still, you should not be surprised if after a fire you find the charred soil covered with spruce seeds.
