It was the worst injury I ever sustained in eight years of full-time cowboy work. I spent a week in bed and had to crawl on my hands and knees to the bathroom. The first Page ix night, when the big muscles in my lower back began to cramp, I wasn't sure I could stand the pain. If we hadn't lived thirty miles from town, I would have told Kris to call an ambulance. I was crippled up for six weeks. When we moved to Perryton, Kris had to do all the packing and loading by herself, for which she should receive the Pioneer Mother Award.

I am most accurate when I get an animal that is running hard and straight. From the Middle Pasture we went to the Lower Section East and doctored two calves, then to the Lower Section West. We each roped one calf and never got them out of a walk. We nailed them both on the first loop. Tom roped his calf deep, however, and the rope got behind his shoulders. He was a big stout 500-pound steer and he was actually jerking Happy around. I had a heck of a time putting my rope on his head. When I got close enough for a shot, I was close enough to get caught in Tom's rope.

Calipso staggered through the mud. I never got her out of a walk, and I'm not sure I could have. She could barely walk. That done, we ate a quick lunch in town and headed for the ranch. Tom and I rode the Home Pasture and found three sick steers. We roped them and put them in the trailer. We caught all three on the first loop, and none ever got out of a walk. Page 24 November 5, 1979 Last Wednesday afternoon Tom and I saddled up and trailered our horses to the Four Corners corral. Lawrence had found a buyer for the big end of the steers, 124 head that weighed around 750 pounds.
