There was no other land in sight. Indeed, there was nothing at all in sight, since even the ice-floes had disappeared during the night. Here and there, I noticed delicate Arctic wildflowers - purple saxifrage, Lapland rosebay, moss-campion, Arctic cinquefoil, dwarf hawksbeard, mouse-ear chickweed, and buttercups - rising bravely from, it would appear, solid bedrock.

Qungujuq and Zacharias could take naps without any difficulty, but I remained awake - how could I sleep with the meteorological equivalent of a pneumatic drill only inches from my ears? So I occupied myself with my journal. If I ever get out of this mess, I wrote, I’m going to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. ” Qungujuq asked me. ’” Lack of sleep was making me testy. “Human beings don’t have roots,” I snapped at him. ” Three days later, the wind moderated to a mere breeze with astonishing abruptness, as if it had suddenly grown tired after such a prolonged display of its muscle power.

Instead, I landed on my compass, which made a gouge in my chest - possibly the first compass-related injury in human medical history. I also landed in a literal boneyard. There were hundreds of floating ribs, clavicles, vertebrae, scapulas, and coccyges scattered around me. They were all from walruses, and they indicated why the occupants of the cairns had inhabited such an apparently unbountiful place - it was only a short distance from the floe-edge, home to the paunchy, hulking aivik. For the Thule Inuit, bounty was determined not by the soil or lack thereof, but by the object at the end of a harpoon.
