According to empiricism, we start with simple ideas or sensations, which simply come into our mind: the mind in this is entirely passive. There can be no intrinsic connection therefore between any two ideas. The only way in which there could be an intrinsic connection which would justify us in associating them would be if we started with the idea of a unified thing, and saw its colour, shape, texture and so on as different properties of this unified thing. The association of different ideas cannot constitute the ‘meaning’ of something as a unified object, since that meaning is already presupposed in our ability to associate (cf.
