The evidence from dated phylogenies is remarkably congruent in suggesting recent diversification of cerrado species in the past 4 Ma. 4 Ma (Jacobs, 1999). We do, however, emphasize how limited the evidence is — representing a tiny percentage of the woody flora of the cerrados — and further phylogenetic studies of cerrado endemics may show earlier divergence times, which could add plausibility to the concept that grass-dominated habitats may have arisen earlier in South America than elsewhere.

Conservation will therefore be principally of fragments within fragments. Ideally, conservation planning within each major SDTF area should take into account its patterns of species richness and endemism. For example, Queiroz (Chapter 6) discusses how only one of the centres of endemism of Leguminosae in the caatingas contains a well-protected Brazilian permanent protection reserve, and makes recommendations for reserves in other areas of endemism. g. Bush, 2002; Durigan, Chapter 3). Our understanding of the Quaternary history of neotropical SDTF and savanna shows that species’ ranges can change remarkably quickly.
