Norway, Australia and Canada have very similar lengths of lives for both men (around 77 years) and women (around 82 years) and the figures for both have improved over this period. In all of these countries females outlive males by about five years. The female proportion of the labour force has increased for all four countries since 1980. Mexico’s participation rate for women is considerably lower than in the other countries, at 33 per cent, but it is growing fairly rapidly. Australia’s participation rate is lower than that of Norway and Canada, which reflects historical trends in each of these countries.
