They have short life spans, are often expensive to repair, it is sometimes difficult to find spare parts, and they easily become obsolete. Many consumer-grade electronics products are cheaper to replace than to fix, even if someone who can fix them can be found. Because they are designed using many hazardous compounds, recycling these products involves processing toxic material streams, which is never 100% safe. Before any electronics company makes the claim of being green and sustainable, it must first go from producing “disposable” products with limited life spans (planned obsolescence) to products that are designed to last (sustainable).

This approach is pursued by an EU decree, Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), aimed at reducing the use of hazardous materials, which now pose a central concern for electrical and electronic manufacturers. This EU decree (in conjunction with the WEEE regulations) restricts the use of certain unsafe substances like lead and mercury in electrical and electronic equipment. This implies that the allowed amounts of these substances in computer components are reduced to substantially safer amounts.

In order to ensure the smooth completion of such tasks, it may be helpful to inform users not to shut down their computers before leaving. Another alternative may be to let the computers check for updates when they are started and install them if necessary. In this case, if a user shuts down his or her device, despite a notification he or she will have to wait for the full update upon the next startup. • Reduce standby power usage. The idea of standby power usage follows the One Watt Initiative, which is a proposal for energy saving by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
