He is sent to kill Tintin in The Broken Ear but ends up saving his life - a debt that Tintin honours and remembers despite the fact that Pablo can never truly be trusted. Paris-Flash A fictional magazine created by Hergé as a spoof of the real life Paris Match (a publication he believed to be somewhat shallow). Paris-Flash features most prominently in The Castafiore Emerald with reporters Christopher Willoughby-Drupe and Marco Rizotto visiting Marlinspike to interview the famed opera star. Picaros The unruly (and frequently drunken) guerillas used by Alcazar to try and wrest control of San Theodoros from General Tapioca in Tintin and the Picaros.

Rastapopoulos is a film tycoon in Cigars of the Pharaoh and there is an amusing misunderstanding when Tintin accidentally stumbles onto the set of his latest production. The book is funny (Sarcophagus suffering the effects of Rajaijah juice delivered by a poison dart and going completely doolally), exciting and atmospheric - in particular the panels on the Red Sea waters as Tintin and Dr Sarcophagus find themselves floating in coffins with sharks lurking around them. Sarcophagus appears to be an interesting early blueprint for Professor Calculus - who would later be introduced to the series in The Secret of the Unicorn.

The sympathetic characters in this book are invariably the oppressed people of colonial powers, the Indian and the Chinese who are resisting Japanese imperialism. The British characters included are also painted in a rather unflattering light by aligning themselves with the baddies in the story. Some of the events that take place in the story are based on actual events if rather simplified for the comic. The blowing up of the Japanese owned railway line which Tintin witnesses is based on the real life Murken incident in 1931 when a Japanese act of sabotage is blamed on Chinese terrorist and used by Japan as an excuse to invade Manchuria and set up the puppet state of Manchukuo which they then controlled.
