W HAT I H A V E tried during this ebook is a survey of track; the type of music which one reveals variously defined as 'concert', 'art', or occasionally even 'classical song'. 'Concert tune' turns out the main worthy, definitely the least inexact or deceptive, of a few descriptions, specially considering that 'art tune' sounds primly off placing, and 'classical tune' quite must be used in basic terms to consult songs written in the course of the classical interval, i. e. the 18th century. live performance track truly ability the type of songs one hears sung at concert events or recitals. Addressing myself to the final music-lover who, notwithstanding he possesses no distinctive wisdom of the track literature, is rarely theless adequate in songs and their singers to wait recitals of Lieder or of songs in numerous languages, i've got certainly restrained myself to that time period during which nearly all of those songs used to be composed, even though now not unavoidably merely to these composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes at the present time. i assume this to be approximately the 3 centuries lined by way of the years 1650-1950, notwithstanding lots of the songs we, as audiences, understand and love have been composed in the midst of this era, in different phrases within the nineteenth century.

Two more which must be mentioned are 'Die Allmacht' (1825) and '1m Friihling' (1826). 'Die Allmacht' is a setting of a poem by one of Schubert's grander friends, Bishop Johann Ladislav Pyrker von Felso-Eor, who, at the period of the song's composition, was Patriarch of Venice and was soon to become Archbishop of Erlau. The song was written while Schubert and his friend Vogl, the singer, were holidaying at Bad Gastein, where Bishop Pyrker was supervising a hospital which he had founded for invalid soldiers.

But, performed by a singer whose technique is secure enough for him to do no more than merely to enunciate the words sensitively and clearly, they can be almost unbearably moving to hear. Another Goethe-Schubert masterpiece of 1816 is 'An Schwager Chronos'. The young Goethe's wildly imaginative address to Time, which he sees as a reckless postilion rushing him towards death, is superb poetry. Once one has heard Schubert's exhilarated and careless setting, it is difficult to contemplate the poem deprived of it.

99 no. 3 is 'Lieblingsplatzchen', a tender and charming response to the poem. None of the other songs in this group is especially memorable, with the possible exceptions of the expressive 'Erster Verlust' (Goethe) and the plain yet not unappealing 'Wenn sich zwei Herzen scheiden' (poem by Geibel). 'Es weiss und rat es doch Keiner' begins as a pale adumbration of Schumann's setting of the same poem, 'Die Stille', in his op. 39 Liederkreis, and then becomes marginally more interesting as it proceeds.
