The Philippines Although 1st Marine Division faced a grinding battle on Peleliu in the Palau Islands between mid-September and late November 1944, the conquest of the Marianas and the virtual neutralization of Japanese forces on New Guinea had cleared the path for Gen MacArthur’s long-desired liberation of the Philippines. Coast Guard cutters and Coast Guard-manned ships played a significant role in this massive series of operations to clear the ten major islands in an archipelago of nearly 7,000 in all.
